Is it possible to plug a land line phone into your computer to call people?
I know it is possible to call people on your computer but my question is...since my laptop has a phone jack in it, is it possible to connect a land line cordless phone into it and use the internet to call people with the cordless phone?
Thanks!

Not that way.
The phone jack on the phone is for your computer's internal modem. A modem fits into the telephone world in much the same way a telephone does - plugging a phone into it is like connectng two phones directly to each other. They can't even talk to each other without help, let alone to the outside world.
It is possible to make an interface that would do what you want: Provide a jack on the computer into which you plug an ordinary landline or cordless phone, and then the phone would work with the various internet telephony services like Skype.
This is in effect what Vonage does except that the Vonage box is a little computer all by itself, with its own Ethernet port to connect to your internet setup.
I've seen ads recently for another product and service that uses more of your computer to do the job: It plugs into a USB port and provides an RJ11 phone jack. Like Vonage it has its own special internet phone service that goes with it.
There are also special handsets for use with Skype... but they're not standard land line phones.
Edit - added: ok, that other product that uses the USB port is called "Magic Jack". This person really didn't like it much: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/320/RipOff03...

VOIP is overkill for you. VOIP is only practical to add lines (not extension of existing lines, as you propose), replace traditional lines coming into your premises, or to use enterprise VOIP phones. The simplest you can do is just get a cordless phone set, likely a DECT one. Next up would be a wireless phone jack extender. You plug the "base" into a power receptacle, and a phone receptacle. The "extension" unit you plug into a power receptaclt, and you plug a telephone into that. Or just wire an extension jack where you need it. Yes, you could get something like MagicJack. and forward your regular home phone to it.

You need a VOIP enabled phone for that, just simple land line phone is not enough, you can't just plug that in. You can buy these type of phones online and there are more and more wireless mobile phones are like that too. At my office we use VOIP telephones, the calls go through the internet and you still need a provider who provides the Voice Over IP service. We use family-phone.com.
