Dog Eating Chocolate?
My One year old cocker spaniel ate chocolates out of a Hershey's bag of candy bars(foil and all)last night. She ate about Half Of the bag.. Shes been really hyper, and didn't sleep at all last night(all she wanted to do was play). I've tried calling the vet, I left a message on their answering machine, its surgery hours. Is there anything else I can do besides trying to keep her as hydrated as possible???
Shes about 20-30 lbs. She had different kinds of chocolate. Dark Chocolate and semi sweet chocolate. I read the charts of how much can really hurt her, but i odnt know how dangerous it would be with a few different types. I'm waiting for my vet to call me back now...

your not going to like this:
it is too late to induce vomiting, so the next step would be to coat.
The effects of choc is lasting, so keep a close eye. Try feeding some plain bread, it coats the stomach and will make her have to go to the bathroom (dogs dont process grains, it goes right through them). Other then that... time.
If she starts to act listless, run to the vet, she may require medication and surgery.

oh boy thats really bad as Im sure you know as a dog owner. If you havent already found out that chocolate is and can be lethal to all animals. You should try and call your emergency vets office and explain what the dog has been up to. If they can suggest something over the phone you will have saved yourself some money but if they say come in and we need to check him out now then just be prepared to shovel out alot of cash. If it can wait you should make an appointment with your own vets office to have him checked out but surely he needs to be seen just to make sure he doesnt have any further problems.

You need to get in touch with your Vet ASAP.
Chocolate can be toxic to your dog. It depends on the amount of chocolate and the weight of your dog. Small dogs, less chocolate needed to become dangerous.
Chocolate contains a chemical known as theobromine. If your dog ingests enough of this it can affect there central nervous system.
On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.
Generally your vet will induce vomiting to remove the chocolate from your dogs system. Prepare for diarrhea and treat for dehydration

She'll be fine. That much won't do anything to her. It's been a while now, so she'll be OK.
