Who has read the story "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote? Who knows what this phrase means?

In the story, Buddy's friend says, "It's bad enough in life to do without something you want; but confound it, what gets my goat is not being able to give somebody something you want them to have." What does this mean? Do you think her prespective is shaped by being "funny and old?"

P.S.

i love that book but i dont remember it--i read it every year when i was really little. i think her at her age she has the profound wisdom to know that giving is better than receiving and that's all what she want's to do--to give and make someone feel good, rather than to receive.
