My 06 Toyota is making a high pitched sound, something like a cross between windchimes and the squealing of a ?
hearing aid. It definitely sounds like metal on metal, and happens when the car is in motion. I can have my foot on the gas, the brake or on nothing at all and as long as the car is in motion it makes that sound. Does anyone know what it might be? I plan on taking it in next week, but I'd like to know where on the money scale it is ($, $$, $$$, $$$$, give up and buy another vehicle). Are we talking $50 - 150, 150 - 300, 300 - 500, or more than 500?
So does anyone have a clue what it might be and the estimated cost?
That's kind of what I was thinking it might be. I hope I haven't driven it too long, it's been making the noise for a while now (about 2 months), but I've just now gotten the money to maybe get it fixed.

Maybe someone has already answered. I would be about 80% sure, you simply need brake shoes. There are wear buttons, that when you get down to a certain level, they put these little pieces of metal in the brake shoes to make noise, so you won't drive it too far. You can drive it casually if this is the case, but need to get in soon or you will ruin drums or calipers. If it is just shoes on one axle, maybe 150, if calipers 300 Just a guess. I do my own so I do brakes for $40 calipers maybe $230

Where it's an 06, it shouldn't have a sensor in it (for the brake-area)... so it will be less than if it were an 07.
Yes, it's probably the wear button on the brakes. I've had cars (various makes/models) make that same goshawful noise, and the best mechanic I know (aka Dad- he can make a gasoline car run on diesel!!) has always fixed it...

You must live very close to me. That little brat is totally awful and very disrespectful. I think we should sic THE CAT on him. Either that or one of my shotguns. No wait, It has to be a pistol so I can legally use the concealed weapon defense. "officer, I was in fear of my life and for the life of my family and other innocent bystanders. I had to "neutralize the threat"". Ya, that's it. Either that or beat him upside the head with a large somewhat limp smoked sausage. I can't stand that brat! Their rottweiler is a sweetie though! She can come and sit by me anytime she wants! Just don't bring the brat.
