How do "Snow Days" work?

So here in Las Vegas it is currently snowing like crazy. We don't usually get snow that sticks in the Valley, but it's already looking pretty white outside and it's predicted to keep up all night long.

In a city that isn't used to snow, I shudder to think what the roads will be like in the morning?

What are the factors that go into consideration when school gets canceled due to a "snow day"?

Update:

They are predicting 3-6 inches in accumulation.

Update 2:

Missydxi: I'm a teacher and I'm hoping for a snow day as much as anyone. We still get paid :)

Update 3:
Update 4:

This just in from the CCSD website:

No school Thursday due to bad weather

Wednesday December 17, 2008 - General

Due to weather conditions and for the safety of students, all Clark County School District schools will be closed tomorrow (Thursday). Students should not report to campus. All administrators, 12-month employees, and office staff should report to work as usual. Teachers and other classroom employees are not expected to report to work since a makeup day may be scheduled later in the year.

Well here in north dakota, where snow storms are all to common, after a snow storm it is pretty icy out, unless the sand trucks are out and abount throughout the night. Well traveled roads tend to be good, depending on how bad of a storm it is. Back roads are normally more icy due to lack of people on them.

Here, if the sand trucks and snow removal people dont get the main roads and all roads to a school cleared, school is canceled. Or if they advise no travel, or if there is low visibility.

Where I live we had our 2nd blizard of the season this last weekend. we got 12.2 inches of snow, and there was school the next day because they got the roads cleared enough for travel. so 3-6 probably wouldnt close schools or buisnesses, unless its real real real bad. sometimes after 3-6 inches it might not even be icy. just depends on the cold and everything else.

But this is comming from someone in north dakota, so it is different in other areas. U might get ur snow day but theres a 50-90% chance there wil be school.

Well, it all depends on location. In some school districts, for example: Michigan schools, upper mid west schools, they would close school for probably between 8-12 inches. In PA, where I live, they can close for 5 inches, (which happened earlier this year) in the upper north east, about a foot would cancel classes. For Las Vegas, since it is not used to snow, and accumulation, then most likey if it sticks to the roads or if the road conditions are slippery and the superintendent thinks it would be unsafe to send the buses out, then you could have a snow day or a cancellation of classes for the day. If the road conditions should get better a little later in the morning, a 2 hour delay, or in some districts a 1 hour delay would fit best.

Also, if snow continues during the school hours and road conditions get bad to really bad, you have the chance of an early dismissal.

Las Vegas most likely doesn't have plows...Any snow around your area will shut down the entire city lol. Your will not have work tomorrow =] I won't have school in Michigan Friday though because the same storm is dropping a foot on us!!

    THEY DON'T WORK!

whenever our stupid town gets snow (last time we got about 5.5 inches), ever single town surrounding us was cancelled and WE only got a two hour delay. we got plowed, and it was STILL slippery, and the stupid school board only gave us a two hour delay.

so i'd say the factors that go into a snow day are what are the condition of the roads?

slippery... OH WELL! SCHOOL'S STILL ON!

    how many inches of snow?

    about 6.... WHO CARES?

however assuming that Las Vegas does not have plows, i'd say that's it about a 99.9% chance you'll have a snow day unless your school board is comprised of evil, education obsessed, superintendant minions that only care about getting paid. sad, really.

yes, trav would be right about the busing factor.

i wouldn't hope too much for one, though. it's always the same... everyone's hyped up about school maybe getting cancelled, and it never is.

FEELING PIGGISH? you can't be serious... 49F and you say it's COLD? try living in -30 degree wind chills! 49 degrees is cold?

  • I KNOW! I live in north las vegas, and its a blizzard here! there's already snow on trucks, and cars, but I really enjoy it. I'm a student, and I figure we'll have to go to school no matter what. I doubt there will be a snow day tommorrow. :( oh well.

If the roads are slick and the schoolboard doesn't think it is safe for busses to drive on them. Usually the main roads are fine but a lot of people live on back roads and they are usually very slick after a snow storm.
