The main characters in the novels are Becky Bloomwood, a recent university graduate who is addicted to shopping. Becky cannot control her spending habits. She comes up with a variety of excuses why she cannot repay her debts or meet with her bank manager, each one more outrageous than the last.

Suze is Becky's best friend, flatmate and the person Becky is most likely to confide in. Suze comes from a rich family.

Tarquin is Suze's rich cousin, whom Becky briefly dates.

Luke Brandon is the owner of a large London based PR firm and Becky's enemy/love interest for reasons you will read about in the book.

Becky's parents are typical loving suburban parents.

Luke Brandon's mother also appears only in the sequel Shopaholic Abroad (Published as Shopaholic takes Manhattan in the United States.)
