Would anyone like to leave a memorial message on the death of Sammy Baugh?

He died yesterday at the age of 93, the last surviving member of the NFL Hall Of Fame. He still holds the Redskin record for touchdown passes, played defensive back as well, and punted well. Know anybody today who could do all that at the pro level?

Update:

With the exception of the snideness of Ferotte (who I acknowledge was correct about the age, 94) these were all great answers. You all make it really tough to pick a best answer.

No- He did things that were at the time amazing. I mean before him the forward pass was rarely used. He was a trail blazer for football. In his own time he was amazing. And now we look back on what he accomplished as one of the greatest quarterbacks, a wonderful defensive back, and likely the best punter of all time and his feats are even more amazing. No one today could even begin to play all those positions at such a high level at the same time. Because of this he was the best football player of all time in my opinion.

None of today's stupid children know him or the heritage of the game, which defines them as superficial. He played from 1938 until 1952.

Players such as Baugh and Don Hutson had endurance WAY beyond today's players. And versatility that modern fans cannot even understand.

He wasn't. He played hard in all aspects of the game, invented much of the modern game, and understood the relative importance of things when he said he wanted to be remembered as a "pretty fair cow man".

It's a shame there isn't more on the "flash in the pan" sports networks.

He was 94 by my records, by the way.

Chuck Bednarik was the last 60 minute man, and I see a lot of similarities between those two salty personalities.

And one thing they both understood: the game may be bigger and all that, but most modern fans have no perspective of the game or the heritage, and very few even have a minimal concept of the realities of the game.

Oh my gosh, this is the first I heard of it. We went to the same high school, though I was 50 years behind him, and was in school with one of his nieces. I have a Sammy Baugh shirt that looks like an old jersey, with his picture in front of an old newspaper article. The town paper had them printed up when the high school retired his number...2 years ago! LOL. I guess better late than never. I live near Austin now and get remarks every time I wear that shirt. My buddy in Richmond, Va. who's a Redskin fan begged me for one, but they stopped printing them.

You say he "punted well". I would say so. He still holds NFL punting records. You also said he's the last surviving member of the NFL Hall of Fame. I think you meant to say the last surviving member of it's inaugural class. Anyway, thanks for the news and the opportunity to respond.

    sexierthanU,

Last year, I wore the aforementioned shirt to my 1st grader's school, to have lunch with him, and a kid who looked about 10 stopped me and said "Cool shirt. Slingin Sammy Baugh, right?". I couldn't believe it. He said he read books on football history, the same as I did as a kid. Made me proud that there are still kids who are that interested. Well, there's one kid at least.

He was the man in the 40s and set things up for Johnny Unitas to revolutionize the position.

Only player to lead the league in passes intercepted as a DB and lowest interception % as a QB.

This guy was the ultimate player, a stud on the field. He was also a real class act. He will be remembered for a long time. We need more men like him to come play the game. What a hero!

Thanks a lot Frerotte. I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that. Really.

He was an inspiratonal man. No one today can do what he did in his days.
