My 14yr old chow mix baby girl is driving me nuts!?

She hurt her left hind leg last year but the vet says she'll get better. Now, she cries and whines, follows me everywhere and whines, limps on her leg, hangs her head and stares....whines and pants. It's hard for her to get up or lay down.

Around 1AM, she starts this routine of walking, walking, walking, trying to get out of the door, whining....kind of like she has Alzheimer's. She wakes me up out of a dead sleep. I'm really concerned about her. She's lost weight and doesn't sleep much.

I feel so sorry for her. I can't afford a vet....can't get out of his office for less than $200. I sure pray she isn't in pain.

Please help!

Your dog is definitely in pain. Whining, panting, and pacing are all signs that your dog is uncomfortable. You need to take her to the vet. Tell them you don't have the money for expensive treatment. Many vets will tailor the care they give to the budget of the patient (remember, they don't want to provide care that won't be paid for). Also, the animal shelter in some cities have low-cost vet clinics. You can call the shelter and ask or see if they can recommend one. The worst case scenario is doing nothing and letting the dog suffer. As the owner of a dog you are responsible for her care. If the dog has a problem that is to expensive to treat she may need to be put down but having her humanely euthanized is a much better way to go then letting her suffer.

There is such a thing a "doggie Alzheimers", correct name of the disease is Canine Cognative Dysfunction. It sounds like your dog has some symptions of it.

The symptoms of days and nights being mixed up, the aimless walking, the staring, facing the wrong side of the door, not sleeping well.

The hard to get up and lay down is not only the old leg injury, which arthritis has set in, but I'm sure, she may have some arthritis in her hips and spine also. Just like humans, elderly dogs get all the same symptons.

There is drug for Canine Cognative Dysfunction, it's called Anipryl, that can be prescribed only buy your veterinarian, but she would have to make a visit to the vet to be sure the diagnosis is CCD.

I've had 2 dogs that had CCD. 1 dog the did well on the Anipryl and I definately saw a difference with her on the drug, she was on Anipryl for approx 2 years, which also included regular exercise and socialization. The other dog did not respond nearly so well. It is very difficult watching our dogs age, especially when they've been so alert and active. Both passed at 17.

well she's pretty old so maybe its... getting close to that "time". Just let her go on with this routine. She'll either get over it or just slip away, but it's all okay. If it's really driving you nuts then you'll find a way to afford a vet checkup.

She must be in pain and this will be hellish for her to cope with. Perhaps it is time for her to go. There are organisations who will help you if there is a problem with the cost of this.

    Take care.

she might have arthritis in the area where she injured the leg. Try giving her aspirn or pills for joint pain. We had that problem and that is what the vet recommended and it worked. Good luck.
