There are three different animals commonly called 'daddy-long-legs' - spiders of the family Pholcidae, harvestmen (which are arachnids, but not spiders), and crane flies, which are insects. They are all pretty much harmless. Daddy-long-legs spiders in the UK have fangs too small to penetrate human skin, and cannot bite you. Those in the US which are sometimes called cellar spiders CAN penetrate human skin with their fangs, but the venom is too mild to produce anything more than a mild tingling sensation. Harvestmen and crane flies have no fangs or venom and cannot hurt you in any way.

It is not, And the three deadliest spiders discovered are the Sydney Funnel Web, Brazilian Wandering and SIX EYED SAND spider.

The first two are the most aggressive and will attack rather than run. The third has the most medically significant venom according to some.

The daddy long legs is either a crane fly, a harvestman arachnid, or a cellar spider. I do know that apparently that one of the two latter killed a red back spider, which is quite venomous, so starting a rumour. On Mythbusters, it was busted with one of the last two.

No it not the most poisonous spider. An urban legend claims that the granddaddy is the most venomous animal in the world, but possesses fangs too short or a mouth too round and small to bite a human and therefore is not dangerous. (The same myth applies to the cellar spider, which is also called a daddy longlegs.) This is untrue on several counts. None of the known species have venom glands or fangs, instead having chelicerae. The size of its mouth varies by species, but even those with relatively large jaws hardly ever bite humans or other large creatures, even in self-defense. The few known cases of actual bites did not involve envenomation, and had no lasting effect.

    Ok....

First, there are three very different bugs called the "daddy long legs", and only one of them is a spider.

The Cellar spider (Family Pholcidae) is often called "Daddy long legs spider". They have venom and can definitely bite you, but the venom is very weak.

Harvestman (Arachnid order Opiliones) are relatives of the spiders that have no venom, no fangs, and are omnivores scavengers.

In the UK and Ireland, Crane Flies (Family Tipulidae) are called "daddy long legs". As flies they have no venom or fangs to bite you with.

Either way you spin it, the myth is just a myth.

Also, the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) is far from the "deadliest spider". Only a couple of people have died from recluse bites and that was due to the bites causing complications. Brown Recluses have necrotoxic venom that eats away skin local to the bite. They have been known to require amputations though.

The "deadliest spider", as in the spider that has the highest mortality rate, is the black widow and it's relatives (Latrodectus sp). A staggering 5% of all *reported* bites have resulted in death, but the majority of reported bites didn't even need serious medical treatment. This represents the most dangerous spider in the world.

The Sydney funnel web spider (Atrax robustis) has been called the "deadliest", due to chemical analysis of the venom, but a grand total of only 13 people have died from the bite, none since the invention of the antivenom in 1981. However, they are highly defensive spiders that are quick to bite when disturbed.

The Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria spp.) is often called the deadliest due to being more aggressive than widow spiders, but they don't have the statistics to compare to the widows. About 7% of reported bites require emergency care and less than 1% have died.

The six eyed sand spider (Sicarius hahni) is another very venomous one. Analysis of the venom showed that it has 10 times the concentration of a necrotic agent as it's cousin, the brown recluse. In theory, the spider's bites would then be 10 times worse than recluse bites and, again in theory, would have a high chance of death. Lab tests on animals using their venom shows devastating results, with multiple organ failure. However, there have never been a confirmed case of someone getting bitten by this spider.

It is not a spider at all, cannot bite you, and is actually beneficial to the environment. They feed on aphids which are destructive to crops. One way to determine if a daddy longlegs is a spider, count the legs. Daddy longlegs has six legs and spiders have eight. Also, spiders have two body parts separated by a tiny waist. The longlegs has one major body part.

It's a myth that daddy longleg spiders are venomous. See the site below for a discussion on the deadliest spiders.
