Teen pregnancy question?

Teen pregnancy rates are really high in some areas of my state. In the north, it is the highest in the nation. I was a teen once but I also knew about birth control and so did my friends. It was very easy to get if you wanted it. Planned Parenthood would give it away free.

So I wonder why the rates are so high? Do teens not know about birth control? That seems hard to believe. Are they just unprepared? Think it won't happen to them? If you are one of these who got pregnant while a teen, can you shed some light on this? I'm not pointing fingers but I wonder what we need to do to help teens avoid this.

Update:

Weird. People seem to be afraid of this question. There are plenty of teen parents here so I wonder why.

Update 2:

I agree Whitney that maybe too much acceptance is a bad thing. We don't want kids to feel so ashamed but not to think that was a good decision either.

Update 3:

I had no idea that boys are refusing to use BC! Girls need to insist and take control of their own bodies.

We are a more liberal society. It's almost as if it's "okay", so when kids do this stuff, they don't even have a guilty concious about it.

More education COULD be the bad thing. Because in a matter of fact, we have MORE knowledge about this stuff these days, and it goes with having MORE teen pregnancys. Teens have to know this stuff isn't okay. It's something we can't be liberal about, it's important to be conservative and be more strict.

Years ago you would be looked down upon if you had a kid. These days, it isn't so much of a problem. Which is good a sence, because just because someone is a teen and has a kid doesn't mean they need to be ashamed for the rest of their lives. But when you have that liberal mindset, and immature teens, it creats a combo as if it's almost okay.

i know friends who have gotten pregnant at a young age and who've either had the baby or got an abortion. they knew about all sorts of birth control but either the guy refused to use it or they were in the heat of the moment and didnt have any at hand so they didnt bother using any protection. some are in denial, some are unprepared, some dont even care. all teenage girls are different. i, being one of them, would never do anything until i was sure i had protection and it was used. there really isnt much adults can do. its the teen's decision. certain teens, like me, are responsible and would be careful but others are irrisponsible and there are even cases where responsible teens, using protection, get pregnant by a chance that the condom broke or any other mishap. anything is possible but theres not much anyone else can do to help teenagers with this problem. its up to the teens themselves.

Yes a lot of people get nuts when you talk about this kind of thing. God forbid you go against the liberal mentality.

I think a lot of them actually want a baby and they do it just because it is something that they can do. It is a lack of self control and over self gratification. I don't think it is a lack of birth control.

I think the root problem is their own absentee parents. I will bet you few of those girls still have their birth father at home.

We have a daycare in my town's high school. That's just sick.

They are going to be worse parents they their parents were. And here I am wanting children but I can't have any.

It goes hand in hand with drink and drugs.

Everyone knows about contraception and the science, but you just don't care when your drunk.

A few of my friends have a had pregnancy scares because when their drunk they forget to use condoms.

I don't think anything can be done, kids know everything they need to, but it won't stop anyone going out on a Friday night and getting pissed and doing things they shouldn't be.

I think there is lack of education. Some schools and parents only teach abstinence thinking that's the best way.

In school all I learned was STD's and pregnancy were caused by sex and to not have it till marriage. We were told that in 7th grade and never again did we have sex-ed or were told about our options and choices.
