R&P: Is there any band that really blew the door wide open for you musically?

As in a band that acted as a sort of gateway to other great bands, something that without your life would have been different?

Mine is (surprise surprise!) Nirvana. Without them I wouldn't have gotten into such great bands as Hole, Pixies, Soundgarden, L7, The Vaselines, The Raincoats, The Stooges, The Breeders, Babes in Toyland, Stone Marble Giants, Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, The Replacements, Husker Du.... it goes on and on. I thank Kurt for having the taste he did because my life would have been very dull without those bands.

BQ: Name a song that specifically mentions your favorite band? (it cant be by them).

MA: I have had trouble finding any songs that actually mention the band, most just mention Kurt... however there is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4gikAXmtc0

Top Suggested Category: Home & Garden > Maintenance and Repairs, I guess that makes sense.... (?)

The Jimi Hendrix Experience got me into 60's and 70's hard rock. Bands including (but not limited to) Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Heart, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, The Doors and Deep Purple. Nirvana also introduced me to alot of bands (many of which you listed) but I didn't want to sound like a copy cat.

Mine is also a surprise (:P)... Led Zeppelin. Before listening to them I was content with the small amount of music I owned and really didn't think any band was capable of having more than a few good songs. Then when I realized I loved every Led Zeppelin song my view of all my other favorite bands changed. I started to go deeper into their music. Then there was when I began listening to The Yardbirds as a result of getting into Led Zeppelin. When I did that I came to realize that even bands I'd barely even heard of could have amazing music. So I guess overall I used to only listen to random songs because I figured going deep would bring nothing... I used to think all the best songs had become hits I would have heard of by then, but their music made me realize I was so incredibly wrong. The general public is rarely right... otherwise I Love the Nightlife never would have reached number five!

    Absolutely. Warren Zevon

When "Excitable Boy" came out in early 1978, I was a typical teenager who listened to FM rock. After hearing that album, and especially after FM rock started closing its format to only playing "big superstars," I realized that what was popular and what was GOOD were not the same thing.

Because of Zevon I stopped relying on radio for information on music and started seeking it out on my own. Of my favorites, only Talking Heads ever got sustained airplay.

BA: A band called "Too Hip for the Room" actually recorded a song about Zevon's diagnosis with terminal cancer, "Warren Zevon's Gonna Die (Life Sucks)."

I remember I used to listen to Three Doors Down years ago when I hadn't even a clue rock existed. That may have contributed to my later search for the music that would fit my taste.

Dream Theater started me out on Rock and that led to me wanting more bands to satisfy my musical needs, yes needs lol. One thing led to another, resulting in me becoming a metalhead and going heavier by the day.

Gotta say The Beatles, (though the Monkees were my 1st band experience before them). After I found The Fab 4, I still liked the Monkees, but the Beatles were light years ahead.

The Beatles blew open my door to rock music as a whole.

Later on, Rush & Yes opened a "side detour" for me called prog rock. :)

I'm still looking to open new doors.
