i have a question about my 1987 audi 80?
i need to replace the heater core and i know that i have to remove the dash to ge to it. but i have herd that i can get to it from under the hood through the fire wall. can it be done? is there something i can do to drive it without the heater core? like if i cant get to the heater core can i still drive the car with out it?

unfortunately, the only way to do it is to remove the dash. And YES you can EASILY reroute around the heater core. Go to your neighborhood hardware store and buy a copper elbow. (I'm pretty sure 1/2 inch stock is what you want but measure the inside diam after you disconnect the inlet/outlet hoses from the core) sounds like you know what your looking for but the heater core inlet/outlet are the two side by side hoses almost directly center on the firewall. Wait till the motor is cool, unclamp hoses (some pinch off the heater core hoses first with a clamping device to prevent coolant loss), throw the elbow in, reclamp, refill coolant and your good to go.
No heat and no defrost though. Not good if you live in colder area...

you can bypass the heater core by connecting the to hoses together going into it but you wont have any heat at all i guess you could buy an dc heater to plug in you cant remove the heater core from the outside
