Any tips about Chennai?

I'm going to have a business visit to Chennai in February or March 09. I've never been to India before. Any tips on food, weather, dress code, places to visit, etc.? I know I could browse the net for some info (will do that later), but I'd like to know from your personal point of view. Thanks much for the answer.

Hi let me welcome you to india and to chennai.

India as you probably know is a very diverse country with all major religions and different levels of lifestyle.

Coming to chennai, it is the capital city of Tamilnadu the southern state of India. Chennai weather is pleasant at the time of your visit as it is the end of the winter.

Cotton and other loose fitting clothes would be fine. Humidity is a bit on the higher side. Temperature should be in the 30 to 37 deg C.

I presume from your profile that you are Indonesian and muslim, food will not be a problem, different types of cuisine are available and there are lots of mosques in chennai.

Dress code is conservative yet not too restrictive.

There are lots of places to visit and depend on the duration of your visit. Google or yahoo for " chennai tourism"

Avoid taking autos as they might fleece you, chennai is a very safe city and you would have no problem as long as you dont flaunt your money, the same precautions you would follow in other metropolitan cities.

I am sure you will have a pleasant experience and take back happy memories.

    Cheers

    Hi there,

I have the same questions as you do and will be heading to Chennai on a business trip in less than 10 days. I work for a large Canadian corporation which is outsourcing part of their call center business out there. It is my first as well.

I have been told that Chennai is a nice city and to not be worried too much. There are plenty of different restaurants/meals for all.

I was told to be extra cautious with the various types of transportation around Chennai. Some might try to fleece you and are very clever/creative at doing so.

I will be sure to drop you a line once I return from Chennai on January 19.

Food .. Be careful about where and what you eat. Doesnt suit everyone's digestive system, especially those from the western part of the world.

Weather... Would be pleasant during feb & mar.

Dress code ... Pretty conservative on the roads. You can let your hair down in discos and night clubs though.

Places to visit ... Plenty, but you need a good guide. Else would be fleeced and cheated.

Chennai would be warm and sunny in Feb-Mar.

There is a Currency Converter, Domestic Flights / Hotels / Car search-booking engine and other links useful to travellers in the website referred below.

Its just like visiting any other city in India. Just be sure what you carry to wear, because that could be very tricky.

You need to decide where to stay, and plan out what to do. You can pick up a lot of conventional ethnic wear/jewelery.

As far as the places to visit, it completely depends on what you're looking for.

I'll update you, as soon as you tell me what you're looking for.

    Good luck & Cheers!
