How much control do we really have over the media/advertising/products?

Many of us bemoan the actions of the media. Celebrities get stalked, stereotypes get reinforced over and over. For my part, I protest with my feet and won't buy the products or media I don't approve of, whilst recommending to others to follow my example.

But then there's the point that, if one thing sells, they make more, and all of a sudden there's nothing but that one thing. I'll use low fat yoghurt as an example. There was once a great range of full cream yoghurts for those of us who aren't on diets and want our food to taste like something. Now, there's maybe one flavour that's not low fat (usually a boring flavour nobody buys), so if you want yoghurt, you get low fat. 'Wow, look how much low fat yoghurt we're selling!' say the market research people, and they seem oblivious to the fact we don't have a lot of bloody choice. I have since learned to make my own, but most people don't have the patience for that (though it's actually quite quick and easy), and they just buy the one that's closest to what they wanted.

So do we have any real control over the media and companies making yoghurt, or are we just a society of people who are willing to complain but not to do anything about it?

Update:

'I'm Me' - the yoghurt story is an example of the controlling tactics of business/media. It's not meant to make you care about yoghurt.

I think the media has control over us. They influence our opinion that's why they paid so much for advertising their products. See how many bad products and products who's damaged our health are in the market. Coco Cola, Pepsi, diet products, artificial sugars, etc, etc.

People still buy time, even they know they are bad and can causes deceases. Cigarettes, ..

  • Your question is much more relevant than the specifics...

I do not believe we as consumers have any sort of power over advertising or products.

Neither we as citizens have any power over the media.

It would not make sense for us to have power over either of these things because:

A.) Giving consumers power over the products means the business owners get the short straw.

B.) Giving citizens the power to control the media gives the government the short straw.

C.) Giving the business owners and the government the short straw has never been successfully done.

As for the specifics- I will be honest. I don't really care about what kind of yogurt you cannot buy.

  • we have full control over the media we just don't exercise it. If we don't like what they report or print we shouldn't buy it or watch it, we could protest with our wallets or changing the channel but we don't.

We always use the old cliche that our celebrities and athletes are overpaid and our good teachers are underpaid, but nothing ever gets done about it. what can you do.
