Ps3 won't recognize controller? HELP?

I just got a ps3 and i plug the usb cord into the ps3 and controller and press the PS button but nothing happens iv tried resetting it but nothing happens.

    1. Power off the PS3 via main switch (Back)

    2. Plug the controller into USB (Front)

    3. Switch the main switch back on (Back)

    4. Tap the standby button to turn on PS3 (Front)

    5. Log in to your account if you need to

    6. Hold the PS button (Middle of controller) and select "Turn off controller"

    7. Now, press the PS button to turn back on the controller

    8. Remove the USB cable.

    Try to connect without using the USB cable - just a suggestion, probably won't work but try it anyway.
