Why is Yahoo Answers using a poisonous boondoggle for an icon?
I refer to the mercury light bulb icon. The government is pushing this light bulb on people because it is supposedly more efficient than other light bulbs, but is it? I suspect that the mercury lobby is behind this. They have paid off corrupt politicians to force us to buy more mercury. And what happens when these light bulbs wear out? Kids will fling them at the pavement to watch them explode, many will end up in landfills, babies will be poisoned when the noxious gas escapes from the broken bulbs, and scads of mercury will be unecessarily unleashed on the enviroment. YA might as well use Mr. Yuck or the Skull & Bones for an icon!
Yes, there is a mercury lobby. For every commodity that people pay money for, there someone who represents it, and tries to grease the wheels.
No rational government would promote this bulb, but there we are.
My main problem with this issue is that the government is presuming to tell what what kind of light bulbs we must have in our homes. We don't need that level of micromanagement. Anyone who welcomes such overbearing state authority is a pusilanimous lickspittle.

actually, people put them in the trash ignoring the hazardous waste they contain and they break and leach into our water supply.
Nice, huh?
Shows why government should but the hell out of industry. It always thinks it knows best but there are always unintended consequences we are stuck with until they change the laws.

What? What are you talking about? What mercury light bulb icon? What mercury lobby? I think mercury bulbs are too bright for indoor use and release intense ultraviolet light. So unless I'm mistaken about those two things I don't think any government would promote those bulbs for use. +++++++++++ I looked and I am thinking of mercury-vapor lamps which are related to what you are saying.

Please be brave my Mate. Don't let that bul.@@it about mercury in fluro's get you down. It is harmless in the quantity released into the atmosphere. Mercury as a solid will dissipate, Carbon used in powering incandescent globes do far more damage. Not too far into 2009, We will have OLED's.(Organic Light Emitting Diodes). These will have no mercury and are safe. In Australia, all incandescent lamps are banned. We can only use Fluro's. Guess I have more faith in our Scientists than most parts of the World. As an engineer, I know they are right.
Mercury Lobby my Bum. The fault lies in your lack of understanding. PERIOD.
Comet Wes. Big difference between Fluro's and Mercury Vapour They are a menace to our landfill.
