Will wrong headphones really damage electronic devices?

Quote: "This MP3 player is optimized for the provided headphones (32 Ohm impedance). Using other headphones with a lower impedance can damage the MP3 player or headphone, especially MP3 players with two headphone jacks." Minimal speculation, please. Best answer will include references.

    well matching impedance maximizes power transfer to the headphones

    to closer the two match the better they playing. if you use different headphones it might damage the device by sending to much power i never paided attention to the impedance in simple headphones but i've got a creative labs and didn't have those warnings best get a impedance bridging type which doesn't have all those worries
