May I have a few tips on upgrading to Direct TV HD?

Over the holidays, my family has picked up a high def television. While trying to connect a few peripherals and try out new services, we're thinking on about upgrading to Direct TV HD. We're already considered other services, and due to circumstances Direct TV is the -only- choice we can deal with. Onto the questions.

1) Is it possible to simply buy only the Direct TV HD receiver?

We want to use it for a while, to try it out on local channels and test the quality of the box before committing to a contract.

I've already had a few horror stories from Dish/Direct TV customers, but I think it may be more of an operator error kind of deal. Is the NEW dish delivered with the standard receiver required?

2) Are there any deal or tricks to take advantage of? If none of the above is possible and we have to shell out for a package, what should we do first?

I'm afraid of grabbing onto the "deals" offered by the website, only to suffer through service issues throughout the entire ordeal. Does anyone know of a few (near)free alternatives to my problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Update:

Are there any call in discounts, or other unconventional promotions I can jump on that aren't very well heard of?

When I signed up for direct TV, I used ebates (which gave me a $45 discount). Its a site that gives out coupons towards promoting websites/services.

Here's a link to the information page (in case you are interested)

Everything is on a contract. No chance to just try it out for a while. You don't own the equipment, it is a lease deal. You must return the equipment when you disconnect service. The new dish is required because of new and or realigned satellites, especially if you want HD programming. HD locals depend on the area you live in.

You could stay with your current DirecTV service and put up an antenna for you local channel's.

Check the yellow page and call a antenna service an see how much it will cost.

Go to www.titantv.com to see what local channel you will get. You will get more local channel off the air than with DirecTV and you will not have the monthly fee.
