Garage Door Opener Interference?
Is it possible for new appliances such as refrigerator, range or microwave ovens to give off enough RF so as to interfere with the operation of a radio controlled garage door opener? My garage door opener lost most of it's receive range about the time that we had new appliances delivered. We have tried two new receive boards and an independent receiver box but nothing seems to correct the problem. Any thoughts?

absolutely possible. i've had many cases this year where simple electronic equipment shut down the garage remotes. verizon also recently sent out a notice that thier cable modems are interfering with garage door opener remotes. one of my more memorable problems was all causeed by a $10 desk fan from walmart that completely killed the remotes. rather than adding to the antenna (which rarely works) try moving the reciever box around the garage. sometimes going a couple of feet one way or the other can make a big difference. as mentioned by someone else, flourescent bulbs also will cause problems.
door doc also has a good answer. when relocating the receiver doesn't help i will try to change the frequency. unfortunately, most active freq's now used are so close together that changing them doesn't have as great an impact as it used to.

Most likely the interference is from something else outside the house, new cell phone tower, new military radio installation within 50 miles, etc. Although I have seen police scanners, satellite dishes, another garage door opener on zero lot line housing, & even a car alarm when the car was within 50' of the house stomp overtop the garage door receiver
Other then making sure the antenna is straight & facing straight down toward the floor there's isn't much you can do with it. Lengthening the wire usually won't do anything or may make it worse. The receivers are tuned for the length of the antenna & changing it throws off the tuning.
You will probably need to change the radio controls to ones that have a different frequency. For years many mfgs used 390 (in the US) & switched a couple of years ago to get away from the military radios.
Chamberlain went to 315 to solve the problem.
The freq should be on the back of the remotes. If you have a Chamberlain/Craftsman/Liftmaster the antenna wire on the receiver will be gray if it is 390, 315 has a purple antenna. On these models you can switch the logic board but you have to replace the remotes also.
There are also a couple of other brands that are in the low 300 range that have independent receiver boxes.

I know for a fact that some PV solar installations due in fact interfere with garage door openers. The newer microinverter type solar panels can interfere depending on the frequencies used.

I guess its possible but not really probable. I would check out stuff like fluorescent lighting for bad bulbs, Christmas lights, and check the batteries in remotes. Appliances now days are designed to put out next to no RF energy. Especially fluorescent lighting that has a weak ballast or flickering bulb can put out lots of RF

Mine was a flickering light bulb on same circuit as Garage Door Opener. So, I replaced the bulb & it's OK now, but later I may have to take the new bulb out as I think there may be a short in the bulb socket wire leading to the electric circuit where the Opener plugs in??

Solar Powered Roof Attic Fans that use Brush Motors spew Radio interference
New units with Brushless Motors are cleaner since there is no moving Armature with
Brush Motor Contacts. Th new Brushless Motors with PWM controllers are even used in Radio Controlled
Car, helicopters, etc to prevent radio interference.
Brush motors are akin to broadband Spark Gap Transmitters, so beware they are RFI generators !

it is possible. It could be weak batteries in the remote. If your home is metal wrapped or insulated really well this could possibly cause a problem. One thing I found out is the outside temperature sensor for atomic clocks, if put outside the garage area can severely limit distance on your remote range.

it is not possible. if you have tried new circuit boards and to no avail. see if you can extend the antenna, closer to the opening.

go to the manufacturer. dont try and solve the problem your self.. it will be frutile
