color coordinating rules...?

I just got a coach purse for christmas (a khaki and mahogany tote) and I was super excited about it until I realized I didn't know what I could wear with it. I grew up with the rule "always match your shoes, belt, and purse"..."never mix brown, black, and navy blue"...etc. What are the color coordinating rules? What can and can't I wear my purse with? Should I always wear brown shoes and nix the black shoes with it? Ahhh!

Brown and black can be worn together if you do it correctly. I do follow the belt and shoes should match (but there are times when they look good without being the same color).

Put on a cute outfit that has black in it and wear your purse. Does it look good? Take pictures and ask other people. Certain outfits can make brown and black clash (in a bad way).

so many of the classic rules for color coordination have been thrown out the window, i suggest wearing what you like with it. If you are really fashion conscious then go on what not to wear's website and they have some great fashion tips that would probably help you.
