    The inquisitors had as an aphorism the words, "We shall love you unto death." to those accused heretics and Witches that were being tortured.

    There were also the same words used for those going off to war in the middle ages.

    I'm going to say that "I love you to death" came from a saying meaning "I will love you til death". It basically means "I love you and I will always love you".

    my best guess is that it started as "i will love you until death" and then got altered somewhere down the road. like i said though, it's a guess, so i'm not sure.

    It's probably came from the marriage vows.
