Responsibilities as godmother?

I was just asked to be the godmother for my cousin's daughter. Can anyone tell me of any specific responsibilities the godmother has? Also, is there any specific baptismal gift that generally comes from the godmother? Thank you.

I can only address the role of godmother in the Catholic tradition. It is the responsibility of the godmother (and the godfather) to make sure the child is brought up in the Catholic religion if the parents fail to do so. There is no specific baptismal gift, but normally the godmother with give the child something to keepsake, such as a plaque that says "my baptism" with a picture of the child or a cross for above the cradle, etc. check out a local Catholic Religious store or online store for more ideas.

The role of the godfather and/or godmother is very important. They must be firm Catholic believers, able and ready to help the newly baptized—child or adult—on the road of Christian life.

To ensure this, a godparent must be at least 16 years old (for maturity's sake), fully initiated (having received Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist), be someone other than the legal parents, and one who leads a life in harmony with the Church.

If you have only one Catholic godparent, then you may have a baptized non-Catholic Christian participate as an official witness. The witness will be responsible for setting a good example for the baptized person while the Catholic godparent will share the specifics of the Catholic faith.
