I am Australian and flying home to Australia after living in UK for eight years...?

My passport is dated to expire six days after I arrive home. Can I fly on my valid, but "almost expired" passport. It's an Australian passport and I am flying one-way to Australia.

You better check, you won't need the hassle after a long flight, and it will only take you an email to the embassy or a phone call. Welcome home by the way.

Contact the Australian High Commision in London asap. While you might have no trouble getting into Australia, you still have to present the passport to depart the UK, and there's a possibility the airline may refuse to take you if the passport is about to expire.

You have to have 6 months left on your passport to leave Australia and land in another country, so I would imagine it would be the same for the other way around. Call Australia House in London and ask them. You may have to get another passport.

I would check, because when we have taken trips out of Australia, it has been stipulated that the passport must be valid for six months.

I know the rules are 6 months from the date of departure. But since you are returning to Australia as an Australian citizen you won't have this problem. I suggest you renew it as soon as you get back.
