when camping: any reason that a silk liner would be superior? camping buffs pls answer?
hi - i have a new, fluffy down sleeping bag which is not really washable so I want to use a liner on the inside. It's rated to below freezing temperatures. I go on a yearly navigation event in winter, and we camp in conditions where it gets to below freezing, down to minus 5 degrees celcius. I currently have a fleece throw that I use to wrap around myself on the inside. Silk liners sound nice but they are upwards of $45, and that's when they are on special. Is there any good reason why a silk liner would be a better option? if they are, I'd be happy to fork out. Thanks :)

If you're already comfortable with the bag and fleece wrap, I wouldn't bother with the silk liner.
Silk is nice as underwear, because it provides a nice, next-to-the-skin feel and extra layer of insulation. But it doesn't cuddle you the way fleece and down---or even flannel---does.
If anything, use the money for a set of silk long-Johns and leave your sleeping set up alone. As the man said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've never used a silk liner in a sleeping bag but the mountain men of old many times carried a crevat( basicly a large scarf made of silk) I have one and use it all the time, it does keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. thats just what I've found to be true about silk!

the only thing I can see that would make silk unique is it's really smooth, easier to move in and easier to get out of, what you have is fine, a wool one would be better, insulating even when wet.

Don't spend money on unnecessary things stick with what you've got. silk is just more expensive.
