When did Al Qaeda make this dramatic change?

From pan-Islamicism (a la Qutb) to "Sunni-ism"?

I always thought that pan-Islamicism was a major component of Qaeda's foundation.

Did I just miss this shift, did the media just not cover it, or was Al Qaeda in Iraq a black sheep?

Update:

EDIT: That doesn't mean that pan-Islamism was not the original goal of Qaeda:

From the John Miller interview, OBL's own words:

What is your relationship with the Islamic movements in various regions of the world like Chechnya and Kashmir and other Arab countries?

Cooperation for the sake of truth and righteousness is demanded from Muslims. A Muslim should do his utmost to cooperate with his fellow Muslims. But Allah says of cooperation that it is not absolute for there is cooperation to do good, and there is cooperation to commit aggression and act unjustly. A Muslim is supposed to give his fellow Muslim guidance and support. He (Allah) said "Stand by your brother be he oppressor or oppressed." When asked how were they to stand by him if he were the oppressor, He answered them, saying "by giving him guidance and counsel." It all goes to say that Muslims should cooperate with one another and should be supportive of one another, and they should promote righteousness and mercy.

Update 2:

...continued:

They should all unite in the fight against polytheism and they should pool all their resources and their energy to fight the Americans and the Zionists and those with them. They should, however, avoid side fronts and rise over the small problems for these are less detrimental. Their fight should be directed against unbelief and unbelievers. ..

Update 3:

From Wiki:

The radical Islamist movement in general and al-Qaeda in particular developed during the Islamic revival and Islamist movement of the last three decades of the 20th century along with less extreme movements.

Some have argued that "without the writings" of Islamic author and thinker Sayyid Qutb "al-Qaeda would not have existed.

Update 4:

2nd EDIT: doesn't exist? Here's an opinion poll including perceptions on OBL:

Here's a story on a survey showing decreased support for Al Qaeda in SA:

Here's a link to the poll:

There is no such a thing called Al Qaeda. I swear to you.

THERE IS NO SUCH A THING CALLED AL QAEDA. People justify their case to war, power and influence by the name. 100's of others made MILLIONS out of this name by writing about it, talking about it, analyzing it, when they have no clue of it and that it does not exist.

I know, I know, I know this truly. I didn't read it from a book, or heard it on TV. I traveled there, met locals, lived there, and never heard of Al Qaeda. The only people that will be familiar with Al Qaeda in any Muslim country are those who has access to the internet and the Western media. Go figure. Average Muslim in ANY Muslim country does not even recognize what Al Qaeda is. You can be a secret society, when everyone is tied by tribes, spouses, arranged marriages, and territory integrity.

I traveled to 7 Muslim countries, Asia and Africa.
