I'm thinking of fostering this mistreated italian greyhound mix, what do you think?

I don't know much about italian greyhounds, I've only interacted with them at the dog park. This dog is very sweet but looks rough. I told the shelter I'm interested in fostering him, giving him a warm home and lots of love while he gets better. But I don't know because I live in an apartment and I don't know if he would do okay in one and I don't know if he'd get along with my dachshund. Since I work full time I"d like my dachshund to have a friend to be with while I'm away. Do you think this is a good or bad idea?

Here is the dogs profile at petfinder btw:

    Oh, what a cutie.

I think you should really foster him, and it says he is good with other dogs.

He looks like he needs some love :)

I suggest NOT. Greyhounds generally, even a mix like this one, are ACTIVE dogs that need a lot of running room. Apartments can be/are torture for an active dog. Now, if you have a large yard out back, one with access through a doggie door, you might get by. But, if it will only be an inside the apartment dog, you will slowly drive an active dog insane or at least neurotic. Other than that, good for you that you are considering this kind of thing. My mom was a foster for animals, all kinds. My mom was the kind of person that animals seem to gravitate to, and always got along with no matter how they were treated in the past. My mom socialized dogs thought to be impossible, and as far as I know, was never bitten, though growled at a number of times. My mom could lay a guilt trip on a dog that growled that always seemed to work... I wish I had that kind of talent...

  • Sounds like a great idea! Lots of dogs need fostering. Italian Greyhounds are generally very sweet, although some can be alittle shy at first. I say if its ok with other members of your family (that are going to be interacting with your new foster) than GO FOR IT! He's a cutie. Introduce your dachshund to him if possible at the shelter. It may be better if he wasn't home all day alone, fosters need recouping to become a happy and well adjusted member of the family.

there is not any way that canines is merely Italian Greyhound/Whippet. For a initiate, the coat is all incorrect for that combination. you're suited, it does look to have a Jack Russell face. yet a JR mating with a Whippet? unlikely. And the canines seems too enormous to be Italian Greyhound, they are rather small. perhaps this is a Lurcher combination? they might are available in that brindle shade. it rather is definately have been given some form of hare coursing canines in there someplace!

I love the greys (whippets and IG better then the bigger Greyhounds). IGs are perfect apartment pets because they are quiet and small.

If introduced to your doxie slowly, you should be ok. Are you just forstering or would you consider giving him a permanent home?

Its an unusual combo tho (of the IG/SharPei) - not sure how in the heck that happened!

I stopped reading at apartment. Grey Hounds are very active dogs and the ones I've came to know are nervous. An apartment may not be a good idea cause he needs a place to run around. Unless you plan on taking him on daily walks around your neighborhood, then I guess it'll be ok. I would first take your other dog to the shelter to have them get to know each other.

Its a good idea and am sure will be well received but make sure you socialise the dogs first gettin them used to each other by introducing them to each other as there is a great difference in size as well.

  • According to his profile, he gets along w/ other dogs and is good-natured, so it sounds like a good idea.

try it out and see if it works. If not you can help find a good home.
