What's up with the wind?
Has anyone else noticed, in the last couple years, how windy it gets and how often?!

Because humans are ruining the environment. Global warming. It is causing all sorts of irregular weather. More wind, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, you name it. It's not going to decrease until we make some huge changes to the environment.

Yes, I think that in my area three things are directly attributable to our increased winds.
The first is that more people are cutting down more trees in the area. Traditionally, the trees helped softened and/or diffused the effects of the wind. They also kept things measurably warmer, ourtside of "wind chill", in the winter and cooler in the summer.
The second is that people are cutting down more trees in the area. One of the counties in our area was using a few "in town" parking lots to generate pre-testing baselines, their testing control population, etc... when running some 5 and 10 year testing the effects of development and deforestation out in their rural areas. Ultimately, they found more rapid, dramatic changes amoung their control "in town" parking lots than they did in their "testing sites". Black topping a gravel parking lot significantly changed the ambient (air) moisture and humidity levels during our summer droughts, increased the temperature in the area in the summer by 5 to 10 degrees, and decreased the area winter temperature by 5 to 10 degrees in the winter. Changes in vegetation types in the surrounding area as well as in the parking lot planters also created climatic changes both in the parking lots themselves and in the immediately surrounding area; this was one of the control sites in a study on the rural areas and testing the surround area was not a part of the oringinal study or equipment allocation. What I remember however, is that there were changes in breezes and winds not only directly due to the changes in vegetation types but, also as a result of parking lot and surrounding area climatic changes; something about the air versus ground temps causes additional air movement.
From what I can tell, the cutting down of trees out and about in the world and/or beyond our back yards is also creating similar affects on a more global basis as the changes in the parking lots of the next county over. In turn, these climatic changes are leading to those types of changes we attribute to the larger issue of global warming. Which in turn, are changing climatic conditions here and there around the world thus affecting the health of the trees that remain.
From what I can tell, individuals can affect the winds in their own back yards in three ways. The first is to plant trees and shrubbery in their yards in type and placement such that the winds will be diffused. If you consider this, remember little trees and shrubs will ideally grow up to be green, lush, big trees and shrubs. The second is to encourage the planting and retention of trees and deep rooting shrubs in your neighborhood and surrounding areas. The third is to support the planting and retention of trees out in the world beyond your own back yard.
