Computer DVD drive ticking?

My DVD/RW Drive in my computer will play a dvd, or a game or whatnot. but sometimes it just kind of freezes, and makes this ticking noise. A kind of clicking. This happens when I'm playing a DVD. It is incredibly annoying. At first I thought it was the hard-drive but it can't be. Any experience with this?

There is a threaded rod in the drive called a lead screw and the laser diode and photodiodes ride on a little assembly nut that moves when the lead screw rotates.

The lead screw is driven by a motor that is geared down, perhaps a gear tooth is worn down or broken.

You will probably have to replace the DVD drive, if you try to burn a disk it will fail. These drives aren't too expensive.

I have replaced the DVD drive on my desktop, having burned and verified over 200 data DVDs in three years - just plain wore the thing out.
