American Christians: according to the Tampa Bay paper...?
... specifically in the article at http://www.tampabay.com/news/perspective/article94... :
1) Atheist nations are happier and healthier
2) the positive effect of religion is seen as being SOCIAL (people), not DIVINE (God)
3) the majority-religious-society in America is CAUSING the improper misery of American atheists.
After you've read the article (and not before, please): comments?
How does this square with the idea of "love thy neighbour / fellow man"?
Even if atheists ARE somehow supposedly "attacking" Christians, what happened to "turn the other cheek"?
How are evangelical Christians supposed to convince atheists that they're all about peace, love, fellowship and understanding when the article indicates there appears to be evidence that it's instead about exclusion, marginalisation and persecution?
(Disclaimer: I am not American or even in America. I'm just reading the article and pointing it out here for discussion. Thanks...)
@ Big Mac:
I have screen-capped your response in case you edit it out later. You have to be one of the most psychologically disturbed people with whom I've ever exchanged.
To want to make lives miserable is already sick enough; but to do it so callously and even without an emotional investment or motivation actually removes you from the domain of humanity.
You remind me of Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter.
@ uh duh: You didn't read the article, did you?
1) Many studies show that atheist societies are healthier with less crime or teen pregnancy.
2) The "social" aspect meant that it was the influence of people, not God, that led to controlled behaviours.
3) But you're the Christian nation with the "In God We Trust" beliefs. The Westboro Baptist Church listens to God's teachings.
4) Source? They were reporting on other studies. Ask Google: Phil Zuckerman is an associate professor at U.Oregon. Gregory Paul ran the study from previous data and was reported by The Times (UK) at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article57... . You're another one of these people who think that the source of the report is the indicator of its quality rather than looking at the information itself.
5) You really didn't read the article, DID you? I specifically asked people to read it BEFORE they responded.

Good one, and I happen to agree with the author of this article. Atheists are absolutely ostracized from our society. Some of the finest people I have known are or were atheists. I find, particularly, the scientific community tends not to be quite so religious.
As a Catholic raised in the bible belt of the south, I know all too well what it feels like to be the outcast of a religious community. Sadly enough, in most people's eyes, even to this day (and I'm old), my peers just shake their heads because I don't share their beliefs, even though the basics are the same. (Most of whom are Southern Baptists).

Um.
1. Many studies show that people who are religous live longer and happier.
2. Religion was meant to be social. It reminds us to be good and to love our neighbors. God is not going to rule our lives. We the people decide.
3. Turn the other cheek? Not that many people have believed in that mainly because the world doesn't listen to God's teachings, as we as MORE SECULAR.
4. TAMPA BAY? great source.
5. Misery, how are we causing it.
