How much $ to own a horse? more detail...?

I live in California. We are thinking about getting a horse. We wanted to know how much it cost for shoeing/trimming, shots, deworming, hay or grain (also which is best for a horse to eat), dental expenses, vet check-ups (do you have to do that, and if so how often?) or anything else or any other tips you may have. It would be nice if you are answering from experience. ANY OTHER TIPS OR ADVICE OR ANY OTHER INFORMATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Just anything to make me a good horse owner.

thank you

Owning a horse is expensive, but worth it. this information may be different where you live but this is how much it costs in my area. Trimming is $25 a hoof. your horse needs trimming about every 3 months. I'm not quite sure on shoeing because my horse doesn't get shoes. For the vet, when my horse got her west Nile Virus shot, Flu shot, rabies shot, and wormer, the total bill was $64. Yes you need to have your vet come at least once a year for shots. Your horse will need hay and grain if you plan on riding. I live somewhere with cold, snowy winters. You could keep your horse on pasture for summer and feed hay in winters. Your horse will need grain if your riding it. If you aren't riding/working the horse, it may just need hay. you also might consider feeding your horse supplement. As for prices, our horse gets hay and oats all year. she gets about 5lbs of oats and 15lbs of hay. (she is a larger sized pony. about 14 hands.) oats are about 24cents a lb, and hay (alfalfa) is about 75cents a lb. This makes the price of feeding $60.45 a month. I don't give her supplement. You will need equipment when you get your horse. Halters, lead ropes, saddles, blankets, bridle, brushes, a helmet, and riding cloths. that will be your first investment. And do you plan on showing? A trailer will be needed. Show cloths are pricey, and entry fees for smaller local shows can be up to $6 a class plus a fees for if you are going to show out of your trailer or rent a stall for the day. plus gas prices to get there. if you clip your horses fur in the winter, you will have to get a blanket. If you stall your horse, it will cost about $10 every time you change bedding. Also money to fix fences and things like that. Riding lessons are about $13.00 a lesson as well. If you don't have space to keep your horse a home, boarding fees start a $100+++. I think that covers most stuff. Owning a horse may cost a lot and be a lot of work but horse are amazing. I love them. Have fun with your horse!!! if your wondering how i know all of these exact prices, i am in 4-H and do the horse project and you have to keep a finical guide of your horse. i don't just know this stuff of the top of my head. that is all. :D

horses are very expensive. they do not need shoes but if you get them you can get cold shoes or hot shoes the cold shoes cost about $100 for all four, and hot shoes are $100 per foot at the cheapest. A good farrier in the states costs about $60 up but in canada it's around $20 up. Shots cost $100 up because you need four way and a couple others, that is the cost if you do them yourself. Dentals cost a lot they are about $500 and need to be done a couple times a year. Vet check-ups are $90. Horses can eat just hay but they need salt and minerals i give my horses 8q of beet pulp and 2q of oats along with a scoop of minerals and a scoop of milled flax, if you use beet pulp you need to soak it over night or it will kill your horse, also if you use beet pulp once a week give all your supplements in bran mash instead of beet pulp, it clears out the system. All in all you are looking at thousands of dollars a month.

here are some Great tips on BUYING a HORSE or PONY.

    http://www.bukisa.com/articles/17091_how-to-buy-a-...

I live in Alberta Canada so cannot really say what your costs will be like - but it also depends on what kind of horse you buy and what you intend to do with it..

a show horse ridden hard daily will require more food.. and showing is $$$

a pleasure horse ridden once or twice a week might not even need shoes.. your best off to learn more about horses and figure out exactly what you want a horse for..

boarding will be the most money - call around to find out rates..

this is a link about unique breeds.. its not really important - but you might like it..

for your first horse - unless you are going to shows for a specific breed only - getting a GRADE (mixed breed) horse is fine,
