Cutting a new key for the ignition, using the door lock? Honda Civic.?
Honda Civic 1984, old car, not powered lock, nor chipped key.
I have talked to a locksmith who will charge $115 to come out and build a new key for the car, but only $15 if we take the drivers door lock to them to cut the key.
Question, is this commonly done and is there a chance that the key for the door lock may not fit the ignition anyway?
Anyone with experience of this or similar prob would be reassuring.
Thanks guys.
ps we did have a spare at my dads, but he's lost it!!

Yes, this is commonly done, if the car started with the same key that opened the door. The door lock is usually more complex than the ignition.

Not trying to knock on you or anything, but It's your car you would have the best knowledge on whether the same key fits the door and ignition.
From the factory yes it is a one key car. That doesn't mean that at some time the ignition could of been replaced it happens.
Honda's have codes on all the locks. It may be easier to remove the lock from the trunk/hatch. The lock for the glove box even has a code but I doubt that year car has a locking glove box.

The key to the door is the same has the ignition, unless the ignition was changed out with a replacement lock.I know this because i have two honda's and my aunt is a locksmith witch i work for at times.
