Can a person retire from the Canadian Military after 10 years?

This person is now in their early 30's and said that they retired from the Canadian Military at the 10 year mark. My understanding was that you could only be retired at that point for a medical reason or discharged.

A person "retires" from the military when they leave it for good. This can be as short as 3 years of service, depending on their job.

However, it is only after 10 years of service that ex-members of the Canadian Forces receive Veteran's Benefits.

There is no "retirement" until 30 years. If you get out after 20, you still get money but it is called a retainer. After 30 it's the same money but it is then called "retirement" There is no 10, 15 or 18 year "retirement". However about 10 years ago the military realized that people that were doing a lot of years (but not hitting 20) had nothing when they got out, so they implemented TSP (Thrift Savings Plan), it's basically a 401K for the military. Service members that get out can then roll their TSP into traditional 401K's These things are fact, not guesses Hope it helps

Not at all...you can retire from the CF at any time simply by not re-upping when the time comes. You can also actually retire early before your date comes-up, although most don't. The drawback is that the pension will be minuscule at best.

I don't have personal knowledge on the point, as my father retired at a 100% disability pension after 25+ years in the CAF.

    Good Luck!
