What is there to do with a child in Austin, Texas?

Two aunties trying to show a child whose military mommy is stuck in Guantanamo bay indefinitly a good time in Austin bit we can't seem to find anything. We took her to the childrens museum yesterday but everything else is closed on Monday-- and the park with laser tag and bumper cars is more for a teenager. Any ideas besides zilker park? She is 5 years old.

Try picking up the free Austin Parenting or Parents Resource magazines that they have at the local grocery store or other retailers. They have everything going on for kids each month.

For free stuff, I'd recommend the Amy's Ice Cream on N. Burnet - it's got a neat playground for kids, and also the playground in the park in the new Mueller development - specifically the one by the lake/fountain - it's the best playground I've seen in Austin. Zilker park has a little mini train that goes all around - it starts near the entrance to Barton Springs pool.

Central Market on N. Lamar often has kid's themed music performances, and they also have a play area. Alamo Drafthouse also does monthly free Kid's movies.

Try Dell Children's Museum downtown or the Austin Zoo (when it is a bit warmer).
