I think my cats tail is broken! The vet says they amputate?

WTF? The last 6 inches of his tail just hangs straight down-the first 6 inches seems fine. He doesn't seem to be in pain unless I try and touch it. I called the ER vet and they sd it would be amputated! Why???

Update:

Edit: I'm taking him to my regular vet on Wednesday but sheesh! This isn't gonna be cheap and I don't want him in pain!!

I'm sure the tail is causing some discomfort for the cat. Also he does not have control over the tail and it may get in the way of him eliminating wast properly. Also the cat is at risk for getting the tail caught in something.

Just as an FYI, the cat will be fine after the tail is amputated. He should go back to normal activity level pretty quick.

I guess it depends on how long it's been broken. If he has had lack of blood flow to the tip of his tail, then that may be the only solution. If you are not satisfied with that answer, then I would call around and get different opinions or simply ask the ER vet why. Ask if there are any other options for your cat. Good luck.

The tail is part of the spine, so if the bone is broken, then it affects the nerves, etc. that are part of the spine. Cats are very stoic, so they really won't show pain very easily. This is not a four alarm emergency, but prompt action will help your cat. Don't worry, he will be fine with a slightly shorter tail.

He will be fine without it!!!! It obviously causes him pain if it hurts when you touch it. Would probably be for the best!!!
