How can I stop my cat from eating plastic?

Over the summer my cat was rushed to the vet. He was there for a week, when he finally passed some plastic. This has been an issue with him for years. I keep everything plastic away and out of reach, but he gets in from time to time, no idea how. When the vet did all the tests on him, he determined my cat has IBD. He is on prescription food. I also have steroids for him when he has a flare up. My vet said he would look for odd things to eat when he has a flare up. I was wondering if maybe having that pet grass available for him at all times, if that may help? Has anyone else had this problem?

Update:

Thank god he has not yet eaten a laundry basket. He sticks to any type of plastic bag.

unfortunately I've heard this is a problem for many cats, one of mine as well.

My cat will lick plastic bags and dig through garbage cans for candy wrappers. The best thing to do it to move small trash cans onto high shelves, or use lids.
