My guinea pigs had lice when I bought them?

I contacted the pet store that I got them from and they wanted me to bring them back. However I would rather treat them than return them. The vet recommends ivomectrin treatments, but a friend of mine that owns another pet store told me to use Ferret flea and tick shampoo. What should I do?

ivomectrin for sure. But also remember to clean out their cage and disinfect it. To make sure they don't come back, clean out the corners daily, and empty the cage about every two weeks.

Ivromectrin is alot more effective, safe and alot less hassle to use on guinea pigs than that of many of the shampoos. Also ivomectrin also offer protection and repels lice and fleas for a number of weeks whereas shampoos only kill the fleas/lice that are present at the time, you can buy the ivromectrin spot on treatment from many pet stores for around £7.00. Also it may be worthwhile to clean out the cage with an insecticidal animal safe disinfectant, also available at many pet stores.

I would try the cheaper solution first, but if that doesn't work, then try the other. The pet store's may work just fine, but you need to make sure if it doesn't then you have to treat it with the vet's recommendation.

the fact that your critters have critters is an inconvenience, but not a crisis.

I would try an over-the-counter shampoo from your friend's pet store. Just follow the instructions carefully, and they should be fine.

Nothing wrong with washing your rodents now and again!

Use the ivomectrin. The vet went to college to learn this stuff, you know.
