Little Bo Peep asked in PetsCats · 1 decade ago

My kitten Niko is 4 months old, she has just had her vaccinations and her flea/worming treatment done........?

..... and I have made an appointment for her to be spayed and micro-chipped in the middle of February. She is showing a lot of interest in going outside (I have had a cat flap fitted for her but it is locked at the moment - and she spends a lot of time looking out through it!). How long should I keep her in after she has been spayed, or is it something that I should judge myself by how well and active she is in the days following the operation? She is my first kitten and I want to make sure that she isn't going to go out until it is definitely OK :-) xx

Update:

pplzk - thanks for that.......... but I do understand that spaying her means that she won't be able to get pregnant...................

Do not let the cat out until she is spayed/microchipped.

It is always best to keep a cat indoors as trouble awaits them outdoors.

Cat fights...increase the risk of infectious disease transmission

    Trauma...hit by car

I could go on but will hold my tongue.

It is a fact that it is cheaper to care for an indoor cat than an outdoor cat

With that said recovery from a spay is atleast 5 days.

Hopefully your vet will send the cat home with some pain management which will keep the cat comfortable as she heals.

I would wait a week post op before letting her venture outdoors.

Best of luck to you and NIko

Hi, I am a cat behavior. Normally 72 hours is fine, and as long they are not scratching and wound is heal... you are fine. But I would wait until it is microchip, so you don't loose the cat.

My advice and I always suggest cat owners, is spent time to play with the kitten. Like 4-5 times a day for about 20 minutes. Cat or kitten that goes outside are more in danger as a predator and disease..

People always worry cat have to go outside, and this is not the case. Cat had been domesticated for years, and cat that are indoor live longer... 5 years longer or more then an outside cat. Outside cat tend to get in cat accident, and more.

I am anxious to see these answers myself. I have a cat I rescued when he was about 6 weeks old. He's almost a year old now and he will pee in the litter box but not poop. He poops in the bath tub if I leave the door open or BESIDE the litter box if the bathroom door is closed. He's healthy, neutured, had his shots, etc... I hope he grows out of this habit! And I've tried putting the litter box in the bathtub... he still manages to "miss" it. And I've even changed kinds of litter. I don't know what's wrong!
