4 month old has pimple/bump on butt....staph infection or just baby acne?

Hi there My 4 month old daughter has had a small little pimple looking thing on her left buttock for maybe a month it did not seem to bother her at all and the pediatrician did not think anything of it at her 4 month appointment when he examined her. Well now in the last two days it has gotten bigger. There is a small bump under the skin (maybe pea size) and the whole area of redness is about the size of dime. There is also a small white head at the center (which i am leaving alone, popping could infect more). I have used warm compresses and bath soaks as well as an antibiotic band aid to shield it from the diaper so no urine or feces get on it. It also seems to be sensitive to the touch now oh and there is no fever i have been monitoring it all day with the temporal scanner which is very accurate. I change her diaper all the time and she never sits in a poopy diaper, I change it as soon as she is done doing her business. The soonest I can get her into the doc is tomorrow early evening...My question is if anyone one has had this issue before, or if anyone's child had staph infection MRSA ect. if so what did it look like and also is there anything else I can do for her until her appointment?

Update:

Thanks for the answers so far...to answer some of your questions.....

first: yes she can sit up already but i dont keep in one thing too long she is a very advanced and energetic baby (she held her head up and looked around in her first week) anyhow she needs constant rotating from one thing to the next and mostly just wants me to hold her.....

Next, no I do not use baby oil on her at all and any lotions I use (bedtime) I do not use on her bottom and never have so not to irritate that sensitive area.

I hope its just a boil, cause i had a bug bite a couple months ago that got a staph infection some how and it had to be sliced open (my leg) and drained and packed, it was horrible and left a terrible scar, anyhow mine looked like hers does kinda thats why I worried about staph, its a fairly coomon bacteria to enter through any wound...i'll find out tomorrow though i guess...thanks guys... :)

Update 2:

Yep I was correct it was a staph infection he did not do a culture so it could still be MRSA he put her on two antibiotics one for resistant (MRSA) and nonresisitant forms.. Poor baby it looks terrible but I think she is doing better, thanks for all of your anwers and if anyone has this happen to them know you know the symptoms never assume its nothing or a boil (no offense good suggestion) make sure you get to the doc cause that damn MRSA will put an infant in the hospital quick. :)

I'm thinking more on the lines of a boil. I don't think it's staph (MRSA), but take her in to be safe. Even with MRSA, if you treat it immediately it is not life threatening and it will clear up. I'm not 100% sure of what MRSA looks like, but I DO know what a boil looks like and what you described sounds a lot like a boil. A boil is similar to a pimple but it's a lot deeper under the skin and most of the time it must clear up on it's own or be drained.

Either way, the bump is most likely not even related to anything more than friction from the diaper to the skin. It happens. I have gotten a boil on my backside before from going four wheeling. It emerged from sitting on a rough surface all day long :)

I heard a similar story like this when I was living in Hawaii about a man that threw a baby that he was babysitting off a bridge onto the H-1 highway. Everyone on my entire street was disgusted and we all grieved for the parents of the baby. So sad, the sick things some people do.

  • have she been sitting on her butt alot? i am sure she cant really sit yet but i mean like on her swings or in the infant carseat? its bit embarrassing to share but when i use to work in the office ( which made me sit on my butt all the time) i got those painful pimple like things all the time on my buttocks. 4 months old is still a human you know.. haha..well dont worry about it i am sure the doctor will prescribe something for your little one.

Do you use Baby oil? Baby oil can clog babies pores and cause pimples like that. I bet that's what it is.

a boil? i used to get them when i was a baby. i wouldn't suggest you do anything to it. keep an eye on it like you have been and be sure to explain it all to your doc.
