why should people remember President Abraham Lincoln and his impact on america?

Because he showed the world that if you have enough military might, that you can subdue your own people at gunpoint, lie to them, and make them claim you're a 'great humanitarian' after you've killed over 600,000 of them while also ignoring your constitution and grabbing powers that aren't yours to claim and destroying and imprisoning anyone who challenges you. He also caused the Civil War instead of unifying the country and he never actually 'freed' anybody. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution which ended slavery wasn't passed until 1866, a year after Lincolns death, and while Tennessee born Andrew Johnson was president, thus making HIM the Great Emancipator and not Lincoln. Remember that slavery was ended elsewhere in the world without a war. Of course that wasn't Lincolns intent anyway. He couldn't have cared less about slaves. He wanted power.
He did this so well that Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and many other dictators have used Lincoln as an excuse when suppressing political dissidents and the U.S. has protested. The 1989 incident in Tienamen Square in Beijing is a prime example. Chinese students were demonstrating against the communist Chinese government and asking for a more democratic government. This went on for a couple of days and many news agencies from around the world were watching and broadcasting from the site. At a predetermined signal, all the t.v. signals were cut off and then the military moved in. The students who weren't killed outright were sent to 're-education camps' to be made into good Marxists. When the United States complained about human rights violations, the Chinese simply said "we just put down a rebellion like Abraham Lincoln did, and you love and revere him..." The U.S. had no reply because the Chinese were right. They had treated their citizens just like Lincoln did his own.
There are very few websites that will give you this information but let me suggest some books. Try "When In The Course of Human Events" by Charles Adams, "The Real Lincoln" by Thomas DiLorenzo
and "The South Was Right" by Ronald and Donald Kennedy. All three books are well researched and full of information you don't find in books written by 'Lincolnphiles', They can probably be found in your local library.

sure, he did no longer carry the country jointly (as though everyone ought to!) yet he positioned it returned jointly. Granted, it became into executed on the cost of a bloody civil conflict, yet Lincoln wasn't the only that began it. Lincoln is a hero, ranked precise up there with George Washington (their photographs hung area via area in virtually each and every lecture room in the country while i became right into a toddler) because of the fact he saved the country united. There would not be a u . s . right this moment have been it no longer for Abe Lincoln. the ultimate tragedy (the two for the country and Lincoln) of the finished sorry civil conflict era is that Lincoln became into murdered formerly he ought to take the south returned into the union. He could have executed it right now and painlessly (particularly conversing) and gotten it over with, so we would not have had Reconstruction and the lingering animosity it generated which prolonged into my lifetime, and became into in charge for all the civil unrest and racial animosity of the 60's, and previous! If Lincoln had lived only one awful 3 hundred and sixty 5 days longer, he'd be an excellent larger hero than we could in all probability comprehend. after all, historic previous is a one-way highway, and we in easy terms see what got here approximately, no longer what ought to have been if issues have been distinctive.

He was the man who actually freed the african americans... He was against slavery, and becuase of that we had the civil war and won.. Meaning the north won and slavery was abolished.. He should be remembered because what he did and because of what type of person he was. He is known as the most honest president if not person in America. MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT!!!

contrary to popular belief, Lincoln freed the slaves not because it was the right thing to do, but to punish the south and to appease his abolitionist supporters in the south. Lincoln would have been more than content to leave African-Americans enslaved. His main goal was to reunify the nation and keep the south from seceding.

He presided during the most difficult and challenging period the US ever faced, the American Civil War.
He also permanently ended the abhorrent institution of slavery in the US.

For the same reason we should remember Martin Luther King Jr. Both fought for racial equality and both were killed for the beliefs they held. One marched against the inequality, and one signed into law freedom for the people most oppressed by the inequality.

The civil war almost split up the entire nations.
The freeing of slaves was a huge advancement in our equality movement.
Why shouldn't you remember it?
- Anonymous1 decade ago
Because he officially ended slavery of black people in America.

They shouldn't. He was caught up in a war during most of his presidency, and before any real action could take place, he gets shot.
He's only a martyr.
