Guitar Tips for Beginners?

So my aunt gave me a guitar, and I'm trying to learn it. It's not the best quality, but I think it will suffice. I've been practicing for several days and my fingers have grown calluses (spelling? Lol). Is there anything I should do specifically to help my technique? Besides practicing... Lol, I've already been doing that. Would scales help? Do your fingers grow accustomed to the hard chords that you have to play? Anything will do :)

You're on the right track and calluses is spelled correctly.

Concentrate on developing a wide knowledge of many chords and their progressions; i.e. what chords follow in a certain key signature.

Focus strongly on music theory; in how to read and write music notation. This will probably be the most important item you can learn for the guitar because it will open the world of music for you.

Soon your calluses will be thicker than the calluses ever felt on your heels. You'll be able to stick pins through them with no pain. When they begin to itch and you want to feel sharp pressure you will know your calluses had finally arrived.

Good success on playing the guitar. Many rewards face you ahead.

It depends on if what kind of music you play, if you play rythym or lead, and if you want to become a proffesional at it and do it for a living, or just as a hobby.

For lead: penatonic scales are good to learn by box patterns. Also just learn some easy solos and stuff to learn what they are written like. Use tabs to learn songs, a great site with tabs is Ultimate-Guitar.com.

If you like rock music, a good beginning song is Smells Like Teen Spirit, and of course the Smoke On The Water intro. If you don't have these CDs you can usually find most songs on YouTube.com. And the more you practice the faster you can learn. Atleast an hour a day is good, but if you have time like 3-5 hours+.
