In an application to US Colleges and Universities, what does the class/school rank precisely mean?
In my school, 115 have taken commerce in 10+2, and the rest 135 have taken science. I have taken commerce. So do I need to write my rank out of all the students in commerce only, or out of the whole batch (that is, 250 - even those who have different subjects )
this is for the application form for us universities when also giving the sat scores, essay and so on.
some established sources with the respective answers will also be desired.
Thanks in advance

you sound like your from south america
class rank is your rank out of your hole class, out of the 250
because ppl here take different electives, but they are still considered as a hole class so I would imagine in you case its the same

Speaking out of experience, it depends on many things. Language, culture, type of people (on average), environment etc. The University I attended ( for four years) was mainly Afrikaans and I'm English which made studying (the main thing) tough. The degree I received was also in Afrikaans (which is a bit bad). The environment was tense due to quite an amount of racism. People were friendly but never had respect. The culture amongst students was lose and not very sophisticated (some students wore pj's to class including their slippers!) The guys and girls there never knew romance and a guy like myself could never score with a girl because I could not find a lady to suite my gentleman like lifestyle. When I tried kissing them on their hands, they would pull back! It was a very lose place and only some really achieved because the University never cared about what the students done but allowed many students their freedom and at the same time sucked money from their parents and allowed them to be exploited by the markets around their especially the accomodation & clothing markets. I finished at least and now I'm successful enough but still not there.

When you go to a high school in the united states, a lot of times your transcript tells you what your rank is.
The rank is calculated by taking your cumulative GPA and comparing it to other people in your school. So the person with the highest GPA is number 1 the second highest is #2 and so on.
For your case, I would say send both just to be safe, and explain what the difference between the two is.
If you are still confused, you can call the schools you are applying to and ask them what they would like, that way you will know you are sending the right one.

In my high school we had weighted classes that were out of different grade point averages. I put my rank out of everyone thought because that extra work was a choice you made and your effort should show.

Sorry, I don't have any sources.
But, class rank is usually determined by your school and usually out of everyone, regardless of what classes they chose to take.
