freeze-proof windshield?
Hello All,
I live in Colorado where winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing overnight. Unfortunately this seems to have a negative impact on windshields; the freezing temperatures cause the glass to crack.
I've replaced 4 windshields (totaling over $1000) in the last 10 years (none of them caused by rocks or collision). My windshield has cracked again, and yet again I must purchase a replacement (which will no doubt crack again in the next year or two).
Does anyone know if there is a better windshield I can buy; something that is designed to withstand subzero temperatures? Is there anything I can do to a normal windshield to increase its resistance to freezing and cracking?

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and I have never seen a windshield break from the cold (-45F) unless some idiot poured hot water on it.
I would suggest that you have excessive flexing of your windshield frame or your glass installer is incompetent. This should not be happening to your car.

If your keeping the same car, try a "bullet-proof" or better known as plexi-glass. $1000 bucks over ten years may not seem justified but the bullet-proof windshields are way more resistant to cracking/shattering. Price them out and maybe you will find it's actually worth the money. As far as making a regular windshield more resistant, anything you apply to the outer surface that will make a "barrier" between the surface of the glass and the ice itself. A cover for the entire car comes to mind. BTW, i live in Louisiana where ice is only found in our kitchen freezer. When the temperature seems cold enough I put WD-40 on my windshield. It displaces moisture, hince, no ice on the windshield. Just wash it off with soap when your ready to roll.

what you could do is put one of those defrosters that plug into your ac outlet and just put it in the middle of the whindshield and it should keep it from getting cold...
