  • where can i find a small LED or CFL G9 bulb?

I have a desk lamp with a small 40 watt halogen G9 bulb. this lamp gets, very, very hot. i've received a painful burn from touching it when it's turned on.

i would like to replace the bulb with a colder (temperature, not color) bulb, like an LED or compact fluorescent. so far i have not been able to find an LED or CFL bulb with a G9 fitting that is small enough (about 0.5" wide and 1.5" long) to fit inside the bulb housing. does anyone know whether the type of bulb i am looking for exists?

  • freeze-proof windshield?

    Hello All,

I live in Colorado where winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing overnight. Unfortunately this seems to have a negative impact on windshields; the freezing temperatures cause the glass to crack.

I've replaced 4 windshields (totaling over $1000) in the last 10 years (none of them caused by rocks or collision). My windshield has cracked again, and yet again I must purchase a replacement (which will no doubt crack again in the next year or two).

Does anyone know if there is a better windshield I can buy; something that is designed to withstand subzero temperatures? Is there anything I can do to a normal windshield to increase its resistance to freezing and cracking?

  • GM takeover: how much would it cost?

    Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm trying to work out a quick-and-dirty guess about the cost of taking over GM. Can any stock-savvy posters respond and advise if I am working this out right?

    stock price: $3 / share

    stock volume: 610,460,000

    total stock value: 610,460,000 shares x $3 / share = $1,831,380,000

if I understand things correctly, this means the takeover value of GM would be just over $1.8 billion. am I working this out right?

  • Would you buy this workout video?

It occurred to me not long ago that the people in workout videos are always in perfect physical form, but many of those who buy workout videos are not.

What if an exercise video were available showing normal, out of shape adults doing the workouts? Assume the video came in a set of 9 DVDs (one for each week of a 9 week workout) and showed the progress of the folks in the video from unfit to fit?

Would you find this helpful and motivating? Would you buy such a workout video?

  • reliable auto cupholder compass?

I'm looking for a compass that will fit in my car's cupholder. it needs to be visible at night (so some type of illumination is needed). also, i prefer that it include some kind of motion-dampening so that it's not constantly swinging through a 150 degree arc while i'm trying to read it. ideally i would like to glance at it for a brief reading without taking my eyes off the road longer than necessary (an undamped compass swings so wildly that you have to watch it for a good 3 - 5 seconds before you know what direction it's indicating).

    any suggestions?

  • Which one would you hire?

Suppose you were interviewing a candidate for an entry-level job. (forgive the sexist language, but for the sake of not having to type "he/she" over and over, let's assume the candidate is male).

He is well-qualified for the position, with a master's degree in a relavent field and a few years of experience. He is personable and friendly. He dresses nicely, and showed up on time for the interview. He is willing to accept a very low starting salary. He has virtually everything you could want from a candidate, but there is one significant flaw: his communication skills are lacking. Subjects and verbs do not agree. Grammatical errors abound. Mispronunciations are everywhere. Overall, conversations with him remind you of conversations you've had with your 4 year old nephew.

Let's assume that your other prospects are less qualified. They don't have advanced degrees, have little or no previous experience, and expect to be payed higher starting salaries. Let's assume, however, that their communication skills are better. Grammar and pronunciation are generally correct, subjects and verbs agree, and they are relatively easy to talk to.

Who would you hire, and why?

The Denver, CO weather report predicts a 40% chance of snow Sunday and a 30% chance of snow on Monday. What are the odds that it will snow at least once Sunday or Monday?

ps -- this is not a homework question -- i'm just curious how to determine the overall odds of snow sometime during the week.
