Both theists and atheists, what do you think of this quote? Agree or disagree and why?

"Man masters nature not by force but by understanding it. That is why science has succeeded where magic failed. Because it looked for no spell to cast on nature."

Mastering nature by understanding it? Actually, man has not mastered sheet. If that was true, no natural forces would have done any damages. Nature happens that's all. The understanding of it, is merely an attempt of preventing the devastation caused by its power.

    That is an xcellent quote,,

    Its kinda in-between tho...

    We try to understand earthquakes,droughts,famine,disease,torn-a-dos

,sunamis, hurricanes ,lightning etc...and by learning about them,we have come to understand them somewhat more then we did a decade ago,or a century ago.

But almost everytime we try and force nature,we either fail miserably,or just dont understand it,or just cant duplicate nature.

I'm athiest, but dont really see where magic comes into the picture,as i cant see u calling theist's magical,or even believing in magic.

Unless u just mean the whole magical aspect of them being believers in something that doesnt exsist. Then i understand.

I disagree with it. Man has mastered plenty of nature by force, and little by understanding.

And I believe magic is simply what we call things before science figures them out... for example, Witches who healed people with herbal concoctions was magic until we discovered herbs actually have healing properties. Mystics meditated on colors to promote different moods, and now we know how colors affect us psychologically. Giant Squids were believed to be mythological sea monsters until a dead one washed up on shore. These things were magic and mythology, now they're scienctific facts.

I'm fairly certain other things that are considered magical/mystical will eventually be figured out and claimed by the field of science as well.

Well, God is the master of nature. But science is a tool of God and is good, helping us understand nature. In my view as a Christian, true science helps us understand God's creation.

I agree with the concept of science, but it isn't true that man masters nature just by understanding it. We force our will on it on a horrifying daily basis.

Man doesn't master nature. We are part of nature, affecting other parts of nature. As our knowledge grows, the more control we have - but "master" is illogical here.

    If Science has succeeded....

I wonder why scientific research continues to attempt to understand "Nature".?

    Interesting Q....Thank You.

Science is just what God told us to do.

to bad just like the religions of today it has fallen a way from its foundations.

it was to Seek the Truth.

and God told us to Seek the truth.

    to search out everything.

    disagree

we have forced nature at our will in lots of areas, and it conforms
