what is fun to do in Dallas, TX?

My husband, 3 year old son, and I are going to Dallas in a week for my husband's work, but my son and I are going to be able to do whatever we want all day, while my husband is at work. Any suggestions would be great. How is the zoo there? We have a membership in our town, so we can go there free. We will be there 2 weeks, so we'll have time for many activities. Thanks for any suggestions=)

To start, here's the Dallas Morning News entertainment guide:

    http://www.guidelive.com/portal/page?_pageid=33,97...

American Airlines Arena is home to the Stars and Mavericks.

This is the Dallas Zoo website. Awesome zoo and my recommendations are to have fun, but lock up your car, keep your valuables out of sight, and go directly from the highway to the zoo and vice versa. The Wynnewood area is popular, but it's main popularity was back in the 60's and 70's:

If you've never gone to a restaurant where you selected raw food to put on your plate and took it up to the cooks to grill, I suggest Genghis Grill:

The city of Addison is known for Restaurant Row and is located in north Dallas; that part of Dallas is the upscale portion. You will find all sorts of unique restaurants there.

    http://travel.yahoo.com/p-map-479478-map_of_addiso...

There are at least 63 restaurants in Addison to choose from, according to this site:

In Addison, this picture is of a giant art sculpture inside of a 'roudabout' thoroughfare. I dare you to search for it!

If you aren't focused on the ritzy, I suggest a small restaurant in Lewisville that has the absolute largest buttermilk biscuits and breakfast/lunch platters of any restaurant I know (if you can handle the load lol) called Ham 'n' Eggs. It;s a venue where many Dallas sports figures go to eat.

For just the couple, there is an underground restaurant called Dakota's:

Then, of course, there are also the other suburbs of Dallas: Irving and Grand Prairie, Lewisville, Coppell and Grapevine, among others.

In Grapevine, you will find some kid venues, including Main Event, a bowling alley with lots of extras! I included a link of all the Main Events in the Dallas area.

The oaklawn area of Dallas (Oaklawn Ave. off of I-35 north of the American Airlines Center) is Dallas' gay & lesbian venue, and has a street, Cedar Springs, that looks similar to downtown Dallas' West End.

Dallas' historic West End has some sights during the day and becomes a nightime venue in Downtown Dallas.

Since I'm runing out of link usage, I'll post the rest of them below.

As of right now, the cheapest gas price is around 1.29/gallon here in the Dallas suburbs area. The absolute best gas station ever as far as convenience and price is QT (QuikTrip), hands down. Their customer service is not just top notch, but monitored. QT even guarantees their gas. If you are ruinning low on tire pressure, their air/water is free. But according to the driver of a fuel tanker who told me "stories" about some gas stations, the best place to go for quality gas is Chevron and Texaco.

Unfortunately, gas stations aren't like restaurants: the lesser known ones aren't generally the better ones to go to. I've even heard some bad stories about some larger ones, like Racetrac, but they have quality stuff inside (no one will beat QT ever).

For something EXTREMELY cool for the family, the Dr Pepper soft drink botling company in Irving, Texas offers free tours of the site on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.! As a former employee there I can tell you it's an awesome site to see the bottles travel down the lines! You might even get to drink one fresh off the line. If you go, ask them about Dublin Dr Pepper! You will need to make reservations by calling 972-721-8394. I'm almost sure they'll still have a fresh pot of hot Dr Pepper with lemon brewing at the receptionist's desk for the winter! All necessary links are posted below, just above the Main Event links.

When I worked at DP, the vat where they store all the bottle tops was an open vat just below a window. It was at that window where the then-owner, Jim Turner, would toss in a grand prize winner bottle top or two to go through the lines.

There is a restaurant atop the Reunion Tower called Antares, although most links I see say it's closed.
