Do roof heating cables actually work?
Well, I thought of installing heating cables for my roof, but I heard from a lot of people they don't do their job very well and that they easily break. So... is it worth buying them? What is a better option? Thanks guys!

they work pretty good. you can use them on your roof, gutters and downspouts to keep them free of ice. as the other poster stated the roof rake (runs about 40 bucks http://www.roofrake.com/Productpages/deluxeroofrak... ) works pretty good

They work, but you're right, they can be a hassle if not installed properly. Personally, I think they are ugly, but if they do the job then so be it. Outside of re-roofing with an ice shield, you can try a roof rake (available at hardware stores) and rake off 3-4 feet of snow in your trouble areas (if you can reach them) after each snow.

Roof heating? They are for preventing ice build-up.An alternative is to remove 4 ft of shingles at eaves and apply a rubber membrane product . Then re-shingle. In Canada it is known as ice&water shield or ice dam .
