If your water breaks, should you go ahead and go to the hospital?

Or, do you still wait until your contractions are about 5 minutes apart. Also, if your water breaks can it be awhile b4 you start having contractions?

Yes you always want to get to the hospital as soon as your water breaks. You usually do have some time before contractions start afterward. The doctors will keep you if your water has broken to prevent infection.

Yes, you MUST go right to the hospital after your water breaks, even if contractions don't start right away. After your water breaks, there is a much higher risk of infection & you must be in the hospital so they can monitor you & the baby for such infection.

If your water breaks you need to go strait to the hospital because there is a risk of an infection if you let it go, contractions or not.

Call your doctor for sure but I would go to the hospital. After the water breaks labor should start very soon and you are increased risk for infection.

It can be a while, or your contractions could start right away. For my second pregnancy, I got the contractions, but my water never broke till I got to the hospital. For my friend, her water broke, and she waited and waited for the contractions. She ended up having to go to the hospital and be put on pitocin. In general though, they tell you that if your water breaks, to wait for the contractions then come in. Depending on where your hospital is though, I wouldn't wait till 5 mins apart. Call your practitioner and get their advice, that will be the best advice.

You should proceed to the hospital immediately.

There is a risk of infection once the water breaks and also the risk of a 'dry birth' which can be painful.

You should go to the doctor immediately after your water breaks because your labor could go really fast or really slow. My cousin's water broke during her baby shower, we rushed her to the ER and she had the baby 5 hours later. My sister's water broke and she didn't have the baby until later the next day. Just head to the ER as soon as it happens cuz you never know.

If your water breaks, you should call your dr or midwife right away and they'll tell you what to do. Usually they will want you to come in to check you out. Contractions don't always start immediately. Good luck!

Call your Dr and head to the hospital. They need to start monitoring you and baby once your water breaks.
