Comments on some prose about smoke signals?

"Are you sure you dug it deep enough?" the aproned old lady screamed, looking back.

"Yes, woman, I did, nearly broke my back, too."

"Well, come on, old man, why're ya so far behind me?"

"It's heavy, I tell ya! The weight is draggin' me down!"

"Shoot, quit your complaining. It'll be the last time you have to carry that crap. I told you, we'll be rid of it after tonight."

Exhausted and spent, the couple reached the same place they trekked every year to perform their ritual bon fire. She stood with hands on her hips, supervising her husband's efforts, shouting out unneeded commands.

"Be sure every bit of it gets in there, I don't want a scrap of it left over for the new year. No siree, I don't."

"Yes, dear," he tolerantly mumbled, "I always do, don't I?"

He poured gasoline on the rubbish and tossed in a match. Flames rose tall as they and soon the smoke formed and lifted to the sky.

"Come on now, come sit with me," she insisted. "We'll watch 'till it's out."

Together they sat in silence. Their eyes, in shame, focused on not the fire, but the twirls of smoke carried upward, engulfed by the night, eventually lost.

Every harsh word, thoughtless misdeed, bitter regret and unreleased hurt from the year before, dreams that had died and promises unkept, that had fueled the flames of discontent in their hearts, now represented by pieces of paper, fueled the flames of the fire. The smoke signaled their release.

He reached down to take her hand and lead her back to the house.

"Woman, I do believe we've figured a few things out. It seems to me them fires don't take as long as they used to."

She smiled and nodded, looking straight ahead.

And as the ball came down, a glimmer of hope rose to the night sky.

Lovely words to move forward with.

I actually cried a little bit, Ma. This is a lovely story of hope! Although, I have to admit a giggle or two, with the way the woman henpecked her hubby! I wonder if I'll be like that one day....*watching all the men run and hide*....maybe not, oh well! Single is me! hehe

Very good Ma and while they were add it they should of roasted some big marshmellows ringing in the new year.Kinda of a sad reading fires use to take forever like life. And now life is gone in a blinking of an eye.You see smoke one second and then in an instant its gone.

    And there it is!

    My New Years Resolution....

To not live in my bitter, unfulfilled past littered with memories of what could have been and what I do not have. But instead I will resolve to let go of the pain in my heart and open up for new experiences and adventures.

To a healthier, happier 2009 for all of us!

    Thanks, Ma.

I loved this, Ma - thank you. The idea of the fires getting smaller - was very heart-warming. Usually - I look to what still has to be done - and very rarely - think of what has been accomplished. The smoke rises to heaven - to present the offerings to the gods for assistance and/or forgiveness ♥
