You may be taking medication that takes potassium out of your system. I used to get leg cramps all night long. I now take a potassium tablet (at the direction of my doctor) daily and no more cramps. Bananas are high in potassium, so is yogurt, apricots. But I found that those things did not help me therefore the tablets. It is not a prescription and can be bought almost anywhere.

Leg cramps are most often caused by a low potassium level. Try eating more bananas and taking an over the counter potassium supplement (found in vitamin aisles of stores). If it doesn't help in a few weeks, make an appointment with your doctor to make sure there's not something more serious going on.

that's crazy you asked that because I just started having charlie horses when I'm about to go to sleep a few nights ago. I think it had something to do with my knee, which I had tore my ACL last month. I really cant help with that. cuz im tryna figure out why i keep having them

Depends on your usage of "charley horse" - do you mean bruising or cramping?

If the latter, look at your diet. Excess calcium (milk, for instance) or not enough salt can cause the cramps. If it's bruising, then that's very unusual for overnight. Perhaps get someone to keep an eye on you while you sleep to check your posture or if you're doing anything unusual like punching yourself. I know that sounds daft, but people do stranger things in their sleep!

try eating bananas or something that contains potassium..you have lack of potassium in your body and that is whats causing the charlie horses.

Source(s): past experience and trial and error til i found out what worked

That means you're not getting enough potassium. Eat high potassium foods a few times a week and you should be good to go.
