Is Catholicism by definition matriarchal?

Or does it manifest that way via culture? Or am I imagining things? Honest, I want to keep an open mind, but I find this striking bend toward matriarchy in both Catholic and jewish homes, and a fairly consistent patriarchal bias or no bias in protestant families. What is with that? How and why, do these cultures adopt gender bias?

Update:

The matriarchal bias is more bottom up, than top down. Catholicism puts an emphasis on Mary. I cannot tell you how many family pictures I've seen with the woman in the center, and family members surrounding her, but only in jewish and catholic homes. I know not all have seen it. I have, believe me, it's there, as some answers acknowledge.

Catholicism was spread to the world through Spanish culture, which is matriarchal.

Protestantism was spread through the world by the English and German, who are patriarchal.

Quite simply, it does mean universal, but practically, what it is is the Church that Jesus established based on the foundation of His Apostles. Catholicism is the means by which the complete revelation of the Truth that Jesus taught and that the Holy Spirit brings to complete knowledge and understanding of. As you can see, many men oppose this and prefer the traditions of men over the Traditions of God in many ways. Hope this answers your question.

Interesting question. Catholicism is always accused of keeping women back, being unsympathetic towards women etc.

No, actually I do not think Catholicism is matriarchal. The head of the Church is Christ, Christ's authority on earth is male, those in charge of parishes etc. are male, and the head of the Catholic household is the husband...again male.

I don't see it. God is referred to as a male. The priests are male. There are no women clergy like in other christian denominations. Who's the matriarchal figure?

    pedophilic is more like it.

i know -- i'll be damned to heck...... but what the heck. How come no other "religions" have had this problem like the RC's have?

    What does that tell you?

I don't see it. I think its more cultural than religious.
